International Symposium on Vitamin D and the Biological Effects of Light

From June 10 to 12, the international symposium “Vitamin D in Prevention and Therapy and Biologic Effects of Light” took place in Homburg. The symposium was a joint event organized by the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology at Saarland University Medical Center (UKS), the Department of Medicine/Endocrinology at Boston Medical Center (Boston, MA, USA), and the Department of Gynecology at Helios Klinikum Krefeld, with support from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Vitamin D in Prevention and Therapy and Biologic Effects of Light.

Enormous scientific progress has been made on these closely related topics during recent years. Our knowledge about the effects of vitamin D and optical radiation on human health has expanded impressively and the underlying mechanisms are now beginning to be unravelled. Results from laboratory and clinical investigations have introduced promising new concepts for the prevention and treatment of cancer and many other diseases. This meeting synergistically offered scientists and clinicians insights into the latest developments in these intriguing research areas.

As in previous symposia, plenary and keynote lectures, as well as round table discussions and poster presentations, gave an update on carefully selected “hot topics”, including new vitamin D metabolites, sun protection, skin cancer prevention, UVA radiation and cellular homeostasis, photocarcinogenesis, and circadian clock. Overview of the chapters and expert interviews:

Brief Summary of the Video

Sunlight is far more than just a source of vitamin D—it plays a vital role in our health.

In a series of interviews, eleven international scientists and medical professionals explain the positive effects of sunlight on the human body.Beyond the synthesis of vitamin D, they highlight potential benefits for the cardiovascular system, blood pressure, the immune system, and overall well-being.

The experts advocate for placing the health benefits of sunlight more prominently at the center of public discourse and medical recommendations. They emphasize the significance of the sun’s natural, broad-spectrum radiation, which offers effects that extend well beyond the simple production of vitamin D.

Another key focus is the extent to which artificial UV radiation can achieve similar positive outcomes. The role of tanning salons and current sun-protection guidelines are also examined, with some aspects discussed critically.

The core message is that sunlight should not be viewed solely as a health risk. Instead, its positive effects should be acknowledged, and a responsible approach to UV exposure—tailored to individual skin types—should be encouraged. Sunburns and excessive UV exposure must be avoided.
